HOW-TO GUIDES
CR-Boxes:
CR-Boxes, aka Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes, are a low-cost DIY air purifier made using 4-5 MERV-13 furnace filters, a 20" box fan, some cardboard, and duct tape. Fan-Club currently has 3 CR boxes and 1 additional filter fan (a box fan with just one filter) available for anyone to borrow for their show or event. More info and studies on air cleaning and effectiveness of CR boxes can be found here.- Determine how many CR-boxes you will need for the space your show or event is in.
Clean Air Stars has a great tool for figuring this out! Aim for 6 air changes per hour (ACH), and click the *advanced* button to show DIY devices. That way, CR boxes will show up. This tool let me know that the room bands play in at the DC (RIP) requires 2.5 CR Boxes; since there is already one smaller air purifier there, we used 2 additional CR boxes.
- Place the CR boxes at least a couple feet from the wall, in an area that they aren't overly obstructed by amps/other equipment. Air should be able to get to the filters on the sides as well as up and out of the fan on top without difficulty. It's also important that the boxes are not in an area people will be dancing/potentially fall or crash into them! They're pretty sturdy, but they won't work as well if we damage them.
Far-UVC:
Far-UVC lights are a range of ultraviolet light that has been shown to inactivate airborne microbes in an area including Sars-COV-2 and other pathogens. Fan-Club has purchased a set of 4 Nukit Far-UVC torches that anyone can borrow for their show or event. To see more about this kit as well as a fantastic collection of studies and other information, visit Naomi Wu's Cyber Night Market- The FAR-UVC kit includes 4 lights and 4 cables inside of a gray carrying case. The lights will be fully charged for each event.
- The best use of Far-UVC is for air, not surface disinfection. For optimal results, the goal should always be to aim your emitters at large, unobstructed volumes of air- not at things.
Tips for placement:
- Place lights up high so that the light they emit is not obstructed (and the lights don't get knocked over). Don’t aim them at each other or concentrate them in one space; try to place them so that each light can hit as much open air/space as possible.
- Unfortunately, the lights do not currently have a way to attach or clip to the wall, so that part may require some creativity. But please don’t use any duct tape or anything that will leave a residue on them/please don’t attach them in a way that blocks the light.

- Do not use the lights while plugged in
